Victor Lopez Classic Headquarters
HOUSTON, Texas -- Four Owls won individual titles and nine placed in the top three overall on the final day of the Victor Lopez Classic Saturday.
Three of the Owls victories came in the field events, highlighted by sophomore thrower Ijeoma Ugwunze and sophomore jumper Daisy Ding. Ugwunze, from McKinney, Texas, won her first collegiate event with a PR winning throw of 48.47m (159-00) in the discus. She later followed that performance up by placing second in the shot put with a heave of 14.19m (46-06.75).
Ding continued her stellar season by winning the triple jump (12.79m) and later placing second in the high jump (1.73m). The Owls other two victories came from freshman distance runner Elsa Racasan in the 1500m (4:34.09) and Belle MacFarlane in the high jump (1.73m).
Rice had three other second place finishes, which included McKenzie Johnson (pole vault-3.87m), Cybil Obiozor (triple jump- 12.59m) and Imani Mark (400- 55.92).
"This was a wonderful night," Rice women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan said. "We had a nice crowd and it's always exciting on Saturday night. We had a lot of breakthroughs, led by Ijeoma. Elsa had a very nice run in the 1500 and Daisy and Cybil performed well in the triple jump. We also had some good vaults despite windy conditions. Overall, we had a good meet. We're still missing some people but we had some great performances today."
Claire Uke also competed in the shot put unattached and threw 17.33m (56-10.25). The Owls placed third overall as a team with 112 points and will next have a handful of competitors at the Texas Invitational in Austin on April 11.
