Nacogdoches, Texas - The Rice women's track and field squad captured five first places at the SFA Alumni Invitational held at Fletcher Garner Track Saturday evening. Winning for head coach Jim Bevan's Owls were Keltie John, Heather Olson, Nicole Mericle, Sharae Robinson, and Tina Robinson.
John won the 800m in a time of 2:16.63, while Sophie Peeters followed in second place at 2:18.58. Olson won the 1500m (4:39.39) and she was fifth in the 800m as well at 2:28.24. Mericle ran first in the 5000m (18:04.15), while placing second in the 1500m (4:41.56).
In the throws, Sharae Robinson was first in the discus with a lifetime best mark of 48.66m/159-8, fourth in the shot put (12.26m/40-2.75), and second in the hammer throw at 48.64m/159-7 for another lifetime best measurement. Her big sister, Tina won the hammer with a toss of 49.01m/160-9. She also was third in the shot put (12.88m/42-3.25).
Other top five finishes included Sarah Lyons placing fourth in the 200m (24.79) and third in the 400m (56.58). Candace Springer was third in the 100m (12.29) and Simone Martin was fifth (12.37). Aaren Pastor was third in the 1500m (4:46.43), while Marie Walsh was fifth (4:59.87). Placing second to Mericle's first in the 5000m was Farah Madanay with a lifetime best time of 18:04.16.
In the 100m hurdles, Kimberly Stanford was third (14.45), while Alex Gibbs followed in fourth at 14.53.
Ariana Ince was second in the pole vault at 3.85m/12-7.5, while Cleona Oliver leaped a lifetime best mark of 3.85m/12-7.5 to place third. Sarah Agara finished second in the triple jump at 12.09m/39-8.
The Owls are in action next weekend when they compete at the Texas Relays April 6-9, 2011, in Austin, Texas.
