Houston - Rice horizontal jumper Sarah Agara captured the triple jump event at the 29th Victor Lopez Classic held on the Rice campus at Holloway Field/Ley Track. Agara won the event with a mark of 12.46m/40-10.5.
"Like every other meet, we had some highlights and some lowlights, but we had a walk-on in Lindsay Miller to win the steeplechase her first time out (on Friday) and we had Sarah Agara winning the triple jump with her second-best jump in two years and she is rounding into form," stated Jim Bevan. "The biggest highlight was seeing a girl like Maya Kirk run like she can run for 300m. She performed up to her capabilities. A lot of our kids think too much and so hopefully off of that performance a lot of people will buy into what we are trying to do."
Coach Bevan received strong performances from his throws corps. Tina Robinson was second in the hammer throw (51.69m/169-7), while Sharae Robinson was sixth (45.34m/148-9) and Brittany Brown placed eighth (44.30m/145-4). In the discus, Sharae Robinson was fifth with a mark of 12.00m/39-4.5.
"The meet itself was an exciting meet," stated Bevan. We had a three-hour segment Saturday night and the stands were three-quarters full and it was loud and exciting. We will probably have more people next year and we want this event to be one of the better track meets in the state and country and it is possible."
The Owls compete April 2 at SFA in Nacogdoches, Texas.
