Britany Williams Breaks School Record in 5000m at Lopez Classic
Houston - The 28th Annual Victor Lopez Classic got underway Friday at the Rice Track Stadium with over 2,000 collegiate and high school athletes competing, making it the largest contingent ever at the Lopez Classic. Rice was also able to show its brand new blue Beynon track surface.
Senior Britany Williams turned in one of the meet's special performances when she broke the Rice record in the 5000m with a winning time of 16:19.27. She surpasses former teammate Callie Wells' time of 16:20.95, set on May 2, 2009 in Palo Alto, Calif.
In the 1500m, Addie Quinn (4:46.71) and Sophie Peeters (4:47.59) placed 11th and 12th respectively to lead the Owls. Halsey Fowler placed second in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:01.26. Former Owl, Lennie Waite broke her own meet record in the steeplechase with a time 10:04.49, faster than the previous mark of 10:12.31. Marie Thompson placed second in the 10,000m with a time of 36:09.33.
The Victor Lopez Classic concludes on Saturday, beginning at noon.
