Complete Victor Lopez Classic Results
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's track & field team closed out the 35th annual Victor Lopez Classic by placing five athletes in the top three of their respective events Saturday at Wendel D. Ley Track.
Senior Cybil Obiozor grabbed the fifth-best triple jump mark in the nation by launching 12.89m to take over the top spot in Conference USA this season. Obiozor, from Pearland, Texas, finished behind only the nation-leader in Tonyecia Burks (13.29m) by saving her best jump for last. In the same event, Daisy Ding placed third for the Owls with a mark of 12.64m.
Other Rice highlights in the field events included a third place result from freshman Camille Little, who moved to 27th in the nation and second in C-USA with a distance of 5.99m in the long jump. Little also placed fourth in the 100m dash (B section) with a time of 12.02. Fellow freshman teammate Michelle Fokam placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.78m, good enough for fifth in C-USA.
Sophomore Giulia Sportoletti placed sixth collegiately (39.18m-7th in C-USA) in the javelin and sixth (1.62m-11th in C-USA) in the high jump.
In the sprints, sophomore Hannah Jackson placed fourth (11.91-8th in C-USA) among collegiate competitors in the 100m dash and followed that up with a second place finish in the 200m with a time of 23.69.
Other highlights from Saturday's action included a victory by former Owl Lennie Waite in the 1500m (4:19.02) and a second place finish from an unattached Elsa Racasan (4:22.48) in the same event.
In dual meet scoring, teams scores were the following: Rice 109-Lamar 54; Rice 134-HBU 69; HBU 84-Lamar 55.
Rice will be back in action next week when they compete in the Texas Relays in Austin.
