HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women’s track and field team opened the 2017 outdoor season by winning two events and placing seven athletes in the top three at Thursday’s UH Cougar Spring Break Invitational.
The meet featured host Houston, Harvard, Texas State, Prairie View A&M and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Rice senior Cali Roper registered a victory in the 3000m with a time of 10:24.68 while sophomore Giulia Sportoletti won in the javelin (37.20m/122-0). Other highlights included a stellar mark from Hannah Jackson in the 200m, crossing the finish line in 23.58. Brooke Johnson placed first among collegiate runners in the 800m (2:16.20) while Dreu Dixson set a new PR in the hammer throw (53.39m/175-02).
“It was good to get started again after about a month off,” Rice women’s T&F head coach Jim Bevan said. “Hannah Jackson ran our fastest 200m in seven years and Brooke Johnson ran a great 800m to finish as the top collegian. We’re looking forward to hosting the Victor Lopez Classic now next weekend.”
