HOUSTON- Rice's women's track team opened their outdoor season with a strong opening day of competition at the TSU Relays. Sharae Robinson won the hammer throw and the discus.
"We had a great day today," said Rice head coach Jim Bevan. "We're really looking forward to tomorrow's action."
Sharae Robinson came close to the school record in the hammer throw, throwing a personal-best 52.03 m to win the event. She doubled up with a victory in the discus, throwing 48.18 m to win the event.
Claire Uke finished right behind Robinson in the discus, throwing 47.95 m for second place.
Casie Wilson and McKenzie Johnson finished 1-2 in the pole vault, clearing 3.65 and 3.50 m respectively.
Belle MacFarlane and Leslie Schilsky finished with times of 1:04.59 and 1:06.80 for Top 6 finishes in the 400 m Hurdles.
The Owls had a strong showing in the 100 m dash prelims, with Tyneisha McCoy (11.93), Candace Springer (12.11), Precious Knighton (12.19) and Simone Martin (12.26) qualifying for the finals.
The Texas Southern Relays continue on Saturday.
