ALBEQUERQUE, N.M. - Rice University junior thrower Claire Uke claimed eighth in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship meet on Saturday, capping off an outstanding indoor season.
By finishing in the top eight, Uke was named a women's USTFCCCA First-Team All-American.
Uke posted a career-best 16.73m (54-10.75) mark, topping her previous best of 16.57m, which had seeded her 15th for the event.
Head coach Jim Bevan said, "We are so proud and excited for Claire! She went in seeded 15th and came out eighth with a new lifetime best and scoring mark of 54-10.75 inches! Claire peaked at the right time and came through at the pinnacle meet of the season. It's a credit to her and to her coach, Nancy Wenzel. They have worked together for three years and she has improved from 45-2 in high school to 54-10.75 and a half. I'm so proud for them!"
Iowa State's Christina Hillman won the event with an 18.15m.
A tape delay of the championship will air Saturday, March 22 starting at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU.
