Houston - Rice freshman Claire Uke won the shot put event with the fourth-best effort in school history during the Shirley Crowe Combined Events competition held Wednesday and Thursday at Holloway Field/Ley Track and hosted by Rice University.

Uke's winning mark of 14.87m/48-9.5 now ranks ahead of Valerie Tulloch's 1994 distance of 14.73m/48-4. Third on the Owl all-time list is Jessica Sommerfield at 15.05m/49-4.5 (2001).

"Claire Uke was phenomenal in winning the shot put," stated Owl head coach Jim Beavan. "To have an effort like she did this early in the outdoor season is extraordinary and we look for to only get better as the outdoor season progresses."

A trio of Owls placed second, third, and fourth in the javelin. Marielle Brisbois was second (31.12m), while Chaney Turney was third (31.02m), and Alicia Janke finished fourth (28.00m).

Janke was also came in second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50m.

This Friday and Saturday Rice will have athletes competing at Texas Southern's TSU Relays in Houston.
