Roper Leads Owls On Day One Of C-USA Championships
Freshman places second in 5000m

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Rice freshman distance runner Cali Roper ran a season-best 16:46.02 in the 5000m run to place second at Friday’s C-USA Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Roper finished behind only UAB’s Elinor Kirk (16:35.38) to medal in her first-ever collegiate track and field championships.
The distance medley relay team of Ellen Diemert, Precious Knighton, Allie Schaich, Heather Olson, Leslie Schilsky, Imani Mark, Katie Jensen and Cybil Obiozor finished in fifth with a time of 12:00.90, earning four points.
Tyneisha McCoy narrowly missed qualifying in the 400m dash, finishing in a time of 56.639 and getting edged by Middle Tennessee’s Shaina Johnson (56.632). McCoy also finished 13th in the 200m dash with a time of 24.78.
Rice (12 points) sits in seventh place overall after the first day of the meet, 12 points behind third-place UAB.
