Birmingham, Ala. - Senior Allison Pye led Rice at the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championship with a school record in the 5000m and the Owls sit in fifth place after day one of competition at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Action concludes on Sunday.
Pye set a school record in the 5000m with a time of 16:18.24 to place third and collect six points for the Owls. She breaks Pam Klassen's 1987 record 16:27.72.
"The highlight of the meet today was the new school record set by Allison Pye in the 5000," said Owl head coach Jim Bevan. "Allison went through the mile in 5:09 and the 3K in 9:39. She moved up to second and fought back and forth with the East Carolina's Brittany Copeland before she was outkicked but nevertheless ran a new school record. She ran an awesome race and I am very proud of her efforts and her performance."
Candace Springer in the 200m prelim ran a career-fast time of 24.48 for either the indoor or outdoor 200m.
In the 800m prelim, Keltie John and Sophie Peeters both qualified for Sunday's final. John was seventh with a season-best time of 2:13.82, while Peeters ran eighth (2:14.01) a day after interviewing for medical school.
"Halsey Fowler led off and came from 10th to fifth on her last 400m and ran 3:38, Sojourner Brown ran the 400m leg and passed to Keltie John, who had just finished the 800 an hour before, who then passed it to Becky Wade who brought Rice from seventh to fourth with an outstanding and fastest split of the night in 4:48," said Bevan.
The Owls picked up nine points in the pole vault event. Senior Cleona Oliver was second with a season-best mark of 3.76m/12-4, while freshman Chaney Turney posted a season-best mark of 3.51m/11-6.25 to finish eighth. Owls' Marielle Brisbois and Alicia Janke tied for ninth also with season-best marks of 3.51m/11-6.25. Chaney earned the eighth spot with fewer misses.
Brittany Brown finished seventh in the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 17.14m/56-3.
Summed up Bevan, "Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with our team. We competed well, hada lot of lifetime bests and had the best indoor 5K in the history of Rice."
