Feb. 14, 2015
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Rice senior thrower Claire Uke registered her fourth consecutive shot put victory in as many tries Saturday afternoon at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on the campus of the University of New Mexico.
Uke won with a heave of 16.91m (55-05.75), beating her next closest competitor by nearly three feet. It was the ninth indoor shot put victory of Uke's career for the reigning All-American.
"Claire is performing at a very consistent and high level," Rice women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan said. "This was a great atmosphere for her and should prepare her well for both conference and nationals."
In addition to Uke, Ijeoma Ugwunze set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 14.72m (48-03.50) to place eighth and top her previous indoor best mark of 13.96m.
The Owls will now prepare for the C-USA Indoor Championships, which will take place Feb. 25-26 in Birmingham, Ala.
