The Rice University women’s track and field teams spent Saturday split between Albuquerque, N.M. (New Mexico Collegiate Classic) and Notre Dame, Ind. (Notre Dame Meyo Invitational).
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Junior thrower Claire Uke recorded the best throw in Conference USA this season in the shot put with a heave of 54-04.50 on the second day of the New Mexico Classic.
Uke finished second in the competition but was the top collegiate mark and the throw was the 11th-best in the nation this season. Ijeoma Ugwunze also placed ninth in the competition with a distance of 43-09.25.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Rice had two athletes place in the top-15 on the final day of the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational. Freshman distance runner Katie Jensen finished 12th in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:05.29 while junior Simone Martin placed 13th in the triple jump with a distance of 38-04.00.
Other top-20 finishes included Daisy Ding in the triple jump (16th: 38-03.50) and Tyneisha McCoy (19th: 56.95) in the 400 meter dash.
The women will make a trip back to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 15, the final warmup meet before the C-USA Indoor Championships Feb. 28-March 1 in Birmingham, Ala.
