The Rice University women’s track and field teams spent Friday split between Albuquerque, N.M. (New Mexico Collegiate Classic) and Notre Dame, Ind. (Notre Dame Meyo Invitational).

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On the heels of a second place (5-08.75) finish in last week’s Howie Ryan Invitational, sophomore high jumper Belle MacFarlane bettered that mark with a near indoor school-record height of 5-10.00 (1.78m) to finish third overall.

The mark was a lifetime best for MacFarlane and is the best measurement in Conference USA this season. MacFarlane nearly broke the school record currently held by Sonya Henry, who performed a mark of 5-11.25 (1.82m) in 1990.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - A group of eight Owls took part in day one of two at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational with freshman Cali Roper, the cross country C-USA Newcomer of the Year, making an immediate impact in her inaugural indoor competition.

Roper placed eighth in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 16:52.07, the fastest time in the event by an Owl since Becky Wade and Allison Pye were freshmen.

Junior sprinter Simone Martin placed 13th in the 60 meter dash (7.68), missing the qualifying time by a tenth of a second. Sophomore Imani Mark also set a lifetime best mark with a time of 1:15.56 in the 500 meter dash (sixth) place while freshman Ellen Diemert set a lifetime best mark of 2:56.01 in the 1,000 meter run (19th place).

The Owls will be back at it on Saturday with competition beginning at 12:10 (CT).
