HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women’s track and field team shined bright on the final day of the Houston Invitational on Saturday, placing three athletes among the top collegiate performers in their respective events.
Junior Cali Roper continued her cross country success by winning the 3000m with a time of 9:52.11. The victory was Roper’s second of her indoor career in the 3000m and her fifth indoor victory overall. Not too far behind Roper was junior teammate Katie Jensen, who placed second with an indoor PR of 9:55.29. The combo finished 1-2 out of 56 total competitors in the event.
In the jumps senior Belle MacFarlane earned the top collegiate mark, second overall, with a height of 1.75m (5-08.75). Amy Acuff (unattached) bested MacFarlane by jumping the same 1.75m in one less attempt.
Juniors Cybil Obiozor and Daisy finished first and second, respectively, amongst all collegiate competition in the triple jump with marks of 12.39m and 12.33m. Both Obiozor and Ding are coming off monster 2015 seasons in which both earned outdoor All-American honors in the triple jump.
Sophomore Elsa Racasan also set an indoor PR Saturday by placing third overall, second collegiately, in the mile. Racasan, from Lugrin, France, ran a 4:53.26 and was followed closely by Jensen (4th collegiately, 5:00.54), who also set a PR.
Rice will next compete at the Charlie Thomas Invitational hosted by Texas A&M next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6. The Owls will then have one more warmup meet (Feb. 12, Howie Ryan Invitational) before the C-USA Championships Feb. 24-25 in Birmingham, Ala.
