Uke Wins Shot Put at Howie Ryan Invite
Jan. 31, 2015
HOUSTON, Texas - Rice senior thrower Claire Uke won her second consecutive shot put in as many meets with a winning throw of 16.46m (54-00.00) at Saturday's Howie Ryan Invitational. Uke, who was named the C-USA Female Athlete of the Week two weeks back after winning the Leonard Hilton Memorial shot put, now holds the fourth and 14th-best throws in the nation.
Joining Uke with top-five performances was sophomore Cali Roper and junior Eleanor Wardleworth, who placed second and third, respectively, in the mile run. Roper finished with a lifetime best mark of 4:58.01 while Wardleworth also set a personal best time of 4:58.15.
The Owls also got efforts in the triple jump where Daisy Ding (12.22m) and Cybil Obiozor (12.22m) placed third and fourth in the collegiate division.
"Claire continues to get better with heavy training," Rice women's track & field head coach Jim Bevan said. "I also thought Daisy did a good job in the jumps, moving from event to event. Even though she's not normally a mile runner, Cali Roper was terrific and Eleanor improved upon last weeks' time by 14 seconds."
The Owls will next travel to College Station next weekend to partake in the Aggie Invitational, Feb. 6-7 at the Gilliam Indoor Track.
