Houston - Rice's women's distance medley relay squad captured first place at the Houston Indoor Invitational Friday night at the University of Houston.
"We are off to a good start in the two-day Houston Indoor Invitational," stated Owl head coach Jim Bevan. "Winning the DMR was the highlight of the day, with an outstanding opening leg of 3:35.9, by Sophie Peeters, who did a great job handing off to Lilian Nwora passed the leader on the backstretch of the first lap and took control of the race and passed in first to Sarah Mason, who then increased our lead with the 800m leg and handed to freshman Allie Schaich, who ran an outstanding leg, going out at the right rhythm and gradually increasing the lead. The time of 12:08 is the best we've run in the month of January in the past few years."
Other Friday highlights include Simone Martin placing fourth in the 400m B with a time of 25.90. In the pole vault, Cleona Oliver placed second with a season-best mark of 3.75m/12-3.5, while Chaney Turney was eighth (3.45m/11-3.75).
"Cleona Oliver looked good in finishing 2nd with an 12-3.75 jump," continued Bevan. "Our other vaulters fared much better and showed improvement over two weeks ago looked much better. We are gradually getting there in the vault. This will be a great crew as the indoor season develops."
