COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Rice's women's track and field team kicked off the 2014 indoor season with an eighth place finish at the Texas A&M Team invitational Saturday afternoon at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
Rice had three top-five finishes, including wins in the pole vault and shot put by McKenzie Johnson and Claire Uke, respectively. Johnson, a sophomore from San Diego, CA, won the pole vault with a height of 13-2.5 (4.03m) to fend off Baylor's Annie Rhodes. It was the second-straight year Johnson opened the season with a victory in the pole vault. Last season she won with a mark of 3.98m at the Texas A&M Invite.
Uke, a junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, won the shot put with a distance of 53-11 (16.43m) to beat TCU's Megan Smith. Sophomore Belle MacFarlane had the Owls other top-five finish, placing fifth in the high jump (5-6, 1.68m).
The Owls return indoors for the Howie Ryan Invitational at the UH Athletics/Alumni Center on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
