Rice women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Schmidt announced the signing of twin sisters Anastasia and Victoria Smirnova to letters of intent to join the Owls for the 2018-19 season.
“We are thrilled that Victoria and Anastasia will be joining our program,” Schmidt said. “First and foremost, they are high character young ladies who will be excellent team players. They are tough competitors who are extremely passionate about tennis and we are looking forward to their arrival on campus in August.”
Anastasia and Victoria Smirnova have been the top ranked players in their age group in Belgium for the past six years, with each winning a national U16 title (Victoria in 2012 and Anastasia in 2013). Victoria has a career-best WTA ranking of 934 while her sister Anastasia’s top ranking is 990. As a doubles team, they reached the finals $15,000 ITF event in Wanfercee-Baulet Belgium in 2016 and reached the semis in 2017.
Their future Rice teammates will open their 2018 schedule on January 13 at the Gulf Coast Quad in Ft. Meyers, Florida and open their home schedule on January 20 when they host Lamar.
