The Rice women's tennis team will join together as a complete unit for the first time this fall when they open play in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship on Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Ft Worth on Thursday.
Elizabeth Schmidt's Owls, who have competed in smaller groups in a number of fall tournaments, will compete in both singles and doubles, looking to advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships which be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing Meadows, New York from November 7-10.
"I think the Texas Regional has a lot of great players and it will be a good test of where we are," Schmidt said. "It's also the first time we'll be traveling as a full team and I know they are looking forward to that experience."
The regional doubles competition will feature four of the top ten teams ranked in the ITA's preseason rankings, including Rice's tandem of Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath, who enter the competition ranked 10th.
Both players were also ranked in singles, with returning All-American Beazant ranked 21st, while Harmath is ranked 49th.
Senior Kimberly Anicete has paced the Owls in fall tournaments with a 4-1 mark in singles, including a win the B Flight Singles at the Rice Invitational in September.
