The rice women's tennis team opened their fall schedule by advancing three of four singles entries into the quarterfinals of The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas on Friday.
Returning singles champion Natalie Beazant, who is seeded second advance with a first round bye and a 6-4, 6-1 win over Tulsa's Marcelina Cichon. She will face Nebraska's Mary Hanna in the next round.
Senior Dominique Harmath, who is seeded fifth, opened with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Brittany Brewster of Nebraska and followed that with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sarah Toti of Texas Tech. She will face Erin Walker of ACU in the quarters.
Freshman Alison Ho opened her collegiate career with a three-set win over Danielle Feneridis of Pepperdine and followed that with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jacqueline Zuhse of Penn State. She will face fourth-seeded Stefanie Tan of TCU in the next round.
Senior Kimberly Anicete was the only singles entry to not reach the round of 16. She beat Kaysie Hermsdorf of ACU 6-0. 6-0 in her opener, but then lost to third-seeded Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine 6-3, 6-1.
Beazant and Harmath are also the defending champions in doubles and advance to the second round with a bye. Anicete and Ho advanced with an 8-3 win over Walker and Micah Hermsdorf of ACU.
