Rice head women's tennis coach Elizabeth Schmidt is one of 12 coaches honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as 2013 Wilson/ITA Regional Coaches of the Year. Schmidt earned the honor for the Texas Region and is now one of 12 finalists for the Wilson/ITA National Women's Tennis Coach of the Year award.
In her fifth year at Rice, Schmidt led the Owls to the second most wins in school history to the round of 32 at the NCAA Championship. The Owls finished the year 21-5, second only to the 1982 team which won 25 matches, and captured the 2013 Conference USA championship. She also saw the Owls rise to 20th on four different occasions in the national poll, their highest ranking since the 1983 Owls spent one week tied for 19th. She was honored by her fellow coaches as the 2013 C-USA Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
She has a 3-2 career mark in the NCAA Championship, including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2012. She also has produced a pair of qualifiers for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships for the second consecutive year. Natalie Beazant will compete in singles and Dominique Harmath will join with Beazant in doubles competition next week at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, IL.
