Elizabeth Schmidt, who led the Rice Owls to the 2013 Conference USA championship and a top 20 national ranking, has been honored by her fellow coaches as the 2013 C-USA Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
Schmidt, who shared the honor last season, led the Owls to a career-best 20-4 record in the regular season and to their first C-USA title since 2006. The Owls have been ranked 20th in the ITA weekly national poll three times this year, their highest ranking since 1983 when they reached 19th in the poll for one week.
She will lead the team to its second consecutive berth in the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship next weekend. The Owls earned an automatic bid by winning the C-USA title and will be looking to make a return visit to the Sweet 16.
The bracket for the 2013 NCAA Tennis Championship will be released on Tuesday during a webcast on NCAASports.com beginning at 4 p.m.
