Elizabeth Schmidt's 20th ranked Rice women's tennis team has earned the top seed in the 2013 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, which will be held at the at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts, located on the campus of the University of Houston.
This marks the first time as members of Conference USA that the Owls enter the championship tournament as the top seed. They won the 2006 title as the seventh seed and finished second last year as the second seed.
"There are a lot of very good teams in C-USA, so to earn the top seed in the tournament is a nice accomplishment," Schmidt said. "We are looking forward to being a part of what should be a really exciting conference tournament and are working hard to prepare for our match on Friday at 10am."
Rice (17-4) will have a first round bye and being play on Friday morning at 10 a.m. when they face the winner of the Thursday match between No. 8 seed UAB and No. 9 seed Old Dominion. Tulsa and Memphis are seeded second and third and also earned first round byes.
Semifinal matches will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the conference championship will be decided on Sunday at 10 a.m.
