The Rice women’s tennis team will face a familiar foe in their final home appearance before Spring Break when the 50th ranked Owls (6-4) host No. 47 Baylor (5-6) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Fans will be able to register to win a 39” LED television prior to the match. Registration will open prior to the match, with the drawing held at the conclusion of doubles.
The Owls and Bears are meeting for the ninth time in the last five years and the 23rd time overall. Baylor leads the overall series 12-10 and has won the last 11 meetings. The two schools met regularly through 1996, but after the end of the Southwest Conference, they met just twice from 1997-2013 before resuming on a regular basis in 2014.
In both 2014 and 2015, the schools played a home and home series in during the regular season and went on to face each other in the second round of the NCAA Championship. Rice’s last win in the series came in 1995 when the Owls took a 5-4 decision in Waco. The Owls last win at home came in 1994 by a 6-3 margin.
The Bears (5-6) were ranked 47th last week (new rankings will be released on Tuesday) and have won two straight and own wins over three of their last four ranked opponents including a 4-1 win over 11th ranked Ohio State on Friday night.
The Owls are 4-1 at home this year after No. 8 Texas Tech snapped their 15-match home winning streak on Saturday.
After the match against Baylor, Rice has a pair of road matches at Denver (March 11) and Colorado (March 13) before returning home to open a four-match homestand on March 16 against UTRGV.
Owls Rally at Baylor Falls Short
Rice started fast and closed with a stirring rush, but fell victim to a sluggish start in singles as Baylor downed the Owls 4-2 at the Hurd Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
