The Rice women’s tennis team wraps up a three-match homestand on Friday afternoon when the 39th ranked Owls welcome Texas State to the George R. Brown Tennis Center. First serves are set for 2 p.m.
The Owls (5-2) have picked up consecutive 4-3 wins over Texas A&M and Houston during their stretch of home matches and have won 16 consecutive matches at home dating back to a loss to Princeton in 2016.
The Bobcats are 0-6 this year after dropping a 4-0 decision to Eastern Michigan on Wednesday in their home opener.
The ITA released the first computerized version of the Oracle/ITA national rankings on Tuesday and the Owls opened at 39th in the poll. Seniors Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang hold down the 16th spot in the national doubles rankings.
Fellow senior Savannah Durkin was named the C-USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the Owls’ wins over the Aggies and Cougars last week. This the second time Durkin has won the weekly honor from the conference. She leads the Owls with a 6-1 record in singles in dual action this year, followed by freshman Michaela Haet (5-1) and Anna Bowtell (4-0).
The Owls will close out their weekend schedule on Sunday with a match at LSU at 11 a.m. on Sunday. They return to the GRBTC next Saturday to host 8th ranked Texas Tech at 11 a.m.

The Rice women’s tennis team turned off the distractions of a blustery March day as well as a determined effort by Texas State to post a 5-2 win on Friday afternoon in their portion of the Owls’ third annual Double Trouble Day held in conjunction with the Rice men’s team.
