Dominique Harmath led her Rice teammates to a strong finish in the final tournament of the fall season by capturing the #1 singles title in the Cougar Fall Open which completed play at the John E. Hoff Courts on the University of Houston campus.
Harmath defeated Elena Kordolaimi of Houston 7-5, 6-3 to win the top flight in the three days of action which was delayed twice by rain. She was one of four Owls to reach the finals of their singles flight, but the only one to take the title.
Katie Gater fell in the finals of the #2 Flight singles to Jackie Kasler of Auburn, Kimberly Anicete fell to Kasler's Auburn teammate Jen Pfeifler in the #3 singles title match and Stephanie Nguyen dropped a tough three-set decision to Celia Fraser of Houston in #5 singles. Sophomore Liat Zimmerman rallied from a first-day loss to capture the consolation title #4 singles.
Even with losses in three of the four title matches, Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt was happy with her team's efforts to close out the tournament schedule.
"It was great to see Dominique pick up the win and Kim and Stephanie closed out solid falls by making the finals," Schmidt said. "I was really proud of Liat for bouncing back from a tough first day and winning the consolation in her draw. I was also excited to see our doubles do so well, even if we could not play the final matches."
The Owls also saw three of four doubles teams reach the finals, but those matches were cancelled because of travel schedules after the competition schedule was delayed again on Sunday because of rain.
Harmath and Zimmerman (#1), Nguyen and Anicete (#3) and Daniella Trigo and Leah Fried (#4) won twice over the weekend to reach the finals.
