Dominique Harmath fought through a first-set tiebreaker to down Maria Belen Ludueña of Kansas to lead four Rice women's tennis players into the semifinal singles round of the 2013 Cougar Classic head at the John E. Hoff Courts on the campus of the University of Houston on Friday.
Harmath advance with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win in No. 1 singles and she will be joined in semifinal play by Alison Ho, Solomiya Zinko and Jane Stewart. Ho defeated Julia Lorca of SFA, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 4 singles, Zinko raced past Ana Gasparovic Iowa State of Iowa State, 6-1. 6-1 in the No. 6 bracket, while Stewart outlasted Macarena Sedano Acosta of SFA 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (1) in No. 7 singles.
Liat Zimmermann and Stephanie Nguyen dropped opening matches and will continue play on Saturday in the consolation bracket. Zimmermann fell to Shannon Hudson Arkansas 6-3, 6-3 in No. 2 singles, while Nguyen was a 6-3, 6-3 loser to Claire Dreyer of Kansas.
Harmath and Zinko teamed for an 8-2 win over Natalya Krutova and Aliona Ladutska Northwestern State to advance in No. 2 doubles, but Rice's two other entries dropped opening matches and will move on to the consolation round on Saturday.
Zimmerman and Ho fell to Texas Tech's Kenna Kilgo and Samantha Adams 8-2 in No. 1 doubles, while Nguyen and Stewart dropped an 8-6 decision to Lamar's Alicia Porte and Dariya Dashutina
