Solomiya Zinko rallied from down a set and 5-0 in the second set to take a three-set win and advance to the consolation round of 16 at the USTA-ITA Texas Regional at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Ft. Worth on Friday.
Zinko fought off three match points from Lamar's Hanna Elving to set the stage for her comeback. After dropping the first set and trailing 5-0 in the second, she captured the set and then routed Elving 10-1 in the tiebreaker to advance. She will face North Texas' Alexis Thoma at 10:30 on Saturday morning.
ZInko's stirring rally and win closed a day of action for the Owls that saw the remainder of their entries eliminated from the competition.
Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath, who were seeded third and fifth in singles, both won opening matches to advance to the round of 16, but saw their tourneys end with losses in the afternoon brackets.
Beazant defeated Rutaja Bhosale of Texas A&M, 6-3,6-0 to earn the right to face Simona Parajova of TCU. Parajova ended Beazant's run with a 6-4,6-1 win. Harmath opened the second day of singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 win over SMU's Dasha Sharapava but then fell to Kiah Generette of Baylor, 6-0, 6-4.
Kim Anicete saw her run in singles end with a loss in the round of 32, falling to the tournament's second seed, Cristina Stancu of Texas A&M, 6-0, 6-0.
Rice's two doubles teams were also eliminated in the morning round of 16 by a pair of teams from the host Horned Frogs.
Beazant and Liat Zimmermann dropped an 8-5 decision to Seda Arantekin and Millie Nichols, while Harmath and Alison Ho fell to Simona Parajova and Stefanie Tan, 8-4.
The Owls will be back in action on November 1-3 when they take part in the Cougar Classic at the University of Houston.
