Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang fought off a slow start to storm back to defeat Texas’ Marta Perez-Mur and Dani Wagland in a thrilling, third set tiebreaker and capture the doubles title at the 2017 ITA Texas Regional Championships Presented by Oracle in Fort Worth on Tuesday.
Savannah Durkin added a second win for the Owls on the last day of action at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU, defeating Texas Tech’s Lana Rush, 6-3; 7-6(7) in the finals of the consolation singles draw.
Hodge and Zhang, the fourth seeds in the tournament dropped the first set, 6-3 but evened things up with a 6-4 win in the second set. The two teams battled evenly through 12 games of the deciding set before the Owls emerged with the win, taking the tiebreaker, 10-8.
“That was a really solid effort by Linds and Wendy,” Rice head women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. “It was a high level match that came down to a few points and they did an excellent job staying committed to their plan and executing their shots. I couldn’t be prouder of them for the way they competed and gutted it out.”
The win qualifies the pair of Rice seniors for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, November 1-5 in Indian Wells, California.
