Kim Anicete and Jane Stewart advanced to the finals in their singles flights to highlight the first day of expedited action at the 2013 Rice Women's Tennis Fall Invitational at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University.
Faced with a threatening forecast for the weekend, the schedule was altered so that the first two rounds of singles were played on Friday along with the opening round of doubles. The revamped schedule now calls for all remaining matches to be played on Saturday.
Anicete reached the finals in the second singles flight, downing ACU's Brittney Reed 6-3, 6-2 in her opening match and then outlasting Jana McCord of Texas A&M, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to reach the finals. She will face Northwestern State's Tatiana Larina in the final.
Stewart earned a bye in her first round in the fifth flight singles, then defeated Emily Conrad of ACU, 6-1, 6-1. to earn a berth against Shannon Beckett of Texas State in the finals.
Each of the Owls three doubles entries captured their opening matches on Friday and advanced to Saturday's final two rounds.
Liat Zimmermann and Solomiya Zinko defeated Sasha Carter and Laurence Pelchat of Montana, 8-6 in the first flight. Alison Ho and Stephanie Nguyen downed Monica Pieratt and Bérénice Van den Bergh of Texas State, 8-1 in the second flight, while Anicete and Stewart raced past Shannon Beckett and Katy Collins of Texas State, 8-2 in the third flight.
Play will resume at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
