Beazant opened play at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning by fighting off four set points in the second set to defeat Simona Parajova of TCU 6-1, 7-6 and advance to the title match, which followed immediately after the semifinal match. Facing the tournament's second seed, Petra Januskova of Penn State, Beazant race to the tournament title by winning 12 of 14 games.
"I'm really proud of Natalie's effort this weekend," Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "It was a very demanding tournament, both physically and mentally, and she once again showed her trademark resilience and fighting spirit. She improved with every match and really played a complete match in the finals."
Beazant was back on the courts after the singles competition to join doubles partner Dominique Harmath in the semifinals. The Owls' duo opened the fall season ranked eighth in the nation and faced Penn State's pairing of Januskova and Devan McCluskey in the semis, advancing with an 8-5 win.
They captured the doubles title with an 8-2 win over Texas Tech's Sandra Dynka and Kelli Hine to close out a successful start to the 2012 fall season.
"Dominique and Natalie had a very solid weekend in doubles and I'm happy for them that they were able to win the event," Schmidt stated. "They played aggressive, disciplined tennis all weekend and it's a great way to start off this season."
