Top-seeded Natalie Beazant advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of straight-set victories to lead the efforts of the Rice women's tennis team on the opening day of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas on Friday.
Beazant, who opened the fall campaign ranked 15th in the country, raced past Giada D'Ortona of SFA (6-4, 6-2) and Natalie Yoo of SFA (6-0, 6-2) to advance to the quarterfinal round where she will face Sandra Dynka of Texas Tech.
Beazant and Dominique Harmath, who opened the fall season ranked eighth in doubles, advance to the quarterfinal round with an 8-4 win over Melissa Hadad and Jessica Kahts of Texas State. The will face Nebraska's Patricia Veresova and Maggy Lehmicke on Saturday.
Harmath won her opening match in singles, downing 2010 champion Julia Mongin, 6-2 6-0, but lost a hard-fought match to Rashmi Teltumbe of Texas Tech in the second round. After splitting the first two sets, the deciding set came down to a tie break, with Teltumbe earning the win with an 8-6 margin.
Senior Katie Gater and Millie Nichols of TCU split tie-breaks in the first two sets before Nichols took the third 6-4 to advance.
Sophomore Kimberly Anicete opened with a straight set win over Sofya Malysheva of Texas Tech (6-4, 6-2) but fell in the second round to Olivia Smith of TCU, 6-0.,6-2.
