Owls roll past DePaul on Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas – In an early tilt on Saturday, No. 26 Rice University women’s tennis topped No. 31 DePaul, 6-1, behind strong play up and down the lineup as all five singles wins came via straight sets.
The Owls opened the day with a strong showing in doubles, as No. 54 Natalie Beazant and Liat Zimmerman topped DePaul’s 51st-ranked squad, 8-6. The Blue Demons picked up an 8-2 victory on Court 2 but the Owls secured the point with an 8-6 win on Court 3 by the team of Solomiya Zinko and Katherine Ip.
In singles, the Owls opened strong with opening set wins on each of the six courts. No. 120 Dominique Harmath extended her winning streak to 10 matches with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph on Court 2 over DePaul’s 125th-ranked player. No. 83 Ip claimed her eighth-straight on Court 3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Alison Ho also kept her steak alive with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win on Court 6 for her seventh-straight victory.
Zimmerman posted a 6-2, 6-3 win on Court 4 and Kim Anicete took a 6-2, 6-4 decision on Court 5.
On Court 1, No. 97 Ana Vladutu rallied back from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to top Beazant 7-5 in the second. With the other singles matches already in the books, the pair played a Super Tiebreak and the visitor claimed the third set via a 10-4 decision.
Rice returns to action on Wednesday when the Owls host Baylor for a 1 p.m. contest.
