Owls Open Road Trip by Blanking Roadrunners

The 34th ranked Rice women's tennis team opened a two-game road swing with a 7-0 shutout of the UTSA Roadrunners at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio on Thursday.

The Owls closed out their future Conference USA rivals by capturing the doubles point and then sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets.

Dominique Harmath and Natalie Beazant each won their fifth consecutive singles matches to give the Owls a quick 3-0 lead. Harmath pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Isabelle Jonsson . Beazant quickly followed swept her fifth straight win at No. 1 singles, downing Jacobea Junger 6-0, 6-1. Over her last four matches, she has won 36 games and lost just four.

Liat Zimmermann delivered the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alena Shichkova, and Kimberly Anicete, Stephanie Nguyen and Solomiya Zinko followed to close out the match.

The Owls will travel to Austin on Saturday to face the 29th ranked Texas Longhorns at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center at noon. The match will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network with Mark Brown and Jon Wiegand calling the action. .
