The Rice women’s tennis team saw an early lead slip away as LSU rallied to defeat the Owls 4-3 at the LSU Tennis Complex on Sunday.

Rice captured a spirited battle for the doubles point when Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang fought back from a 40-15 deficit at 5-5 to win the final two games and give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Anna Bowtell and Savannah Durkin added wins in singles, but the Tigers tied things up with straight set wins on courts two, three and four and then clinched with a three-set win on court one.

“Credit to LSU, they kept chipping away and were able to be on the winning side of this match,” Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. “There were a lot of close sets and matches out there and they were able to take their opportunities a little more than us today in the singles. We'll get back to work on Tuesday and work hard this week to prepare for Texas Tech.”

Rice hosts the Red Raiders, currently ranked eighth, at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
