The Rice Owls evened their Conference USA record by grinding out a 6-1 win over Tulane at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on Friday afternoon.
While the match lasted more than four hours, the outcome of the match was decided much earlier as the Owls captured the doubles point and straight set wins at 2, 4, and 6. The final points featured a lengthy battle on the stadium court between Rice's Natalie Beazant and Tulane's Klara Vyskocilova and an even tighter contest on Court 5 between Kimberly Anicete and Caroline Magnusson.
Beazant, who entered play ranked 84th in the country, dropped the first set 6-2 to Vyskocilova who is currently ranked 88th. Beazant returned the favor by winning the second set by an identical score, but had to rally in the third set. She trailed 3-0 in the deciding set before recovering for a 6-4 win.
Anicete and Magnusson traded tiebreak wins in the first two sets before Magnusson gave the match's final point to Tulane with a 10-7 win in the super set.
The Owls will be back on the Jack Hess courts on Sunday morning when they face 21st ranked Texas Tech at 10 a.m. Owls fans will be able to enjoy free breakfast tacos prior to the match. The Owls and Red Raiders met two weeks ago on the opener of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, with Tech taking a 4-2 decision.
