Wendy Zhang picked up a win over a ranked opponent and combined with Priya Niezgoda on an unbeaten morning of tennis to highlight action for the Rice women’s tennis team at the FGCU Spring Invitational in Fort Myers, Florida on Sunday.
Zhang outlasted Denver’s 65th ranked Julia O'Loughlin, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3) to lead the Owls to four wins in five singles matches against the Bears after pairing with Niezgoda to down South Carolina’s Paige Cline and Ingrid Martins in doubles.
“Priya and Wendy really led the way today for our team,” Rice head coach Elizabeth Schmidt said. "First they came out and took care of business in doubles against South Carolina and then in singles they both really dug their heels in and showed a great deal of toughness and resilience. The freshmen also did a nice job rebounding after doubles and competed well in the singles.”
The Owls wrap up action on Monday with singles action against FGCU at 8 a.m.
“We’re looking forward to another good day of competition tomorrow as each match is a great opportunity for our team to grow and improve.,” Schmidt added.
