LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Day One Final Individual Results html
Rice sophomore Brittany Massengale posted a season-best time of 4:51.45 to win the 500-yard freestyle, leading an Owl display of strength in the distance events with five individual finishers in the top 12 on the first of competition at the UNLV Winter Invitational Saturday evening in Las Vegas, Nev.
Massengale knocked a full three seconds off her previous best to win the 500-free over a field of 26 competitors from 10 schools. Her 4:51.45 was also a comfortable three seconds ahead of the second place finisher. A total of five Owls finished in the top 12 in the event, including sophomore Carey Hain with a fifth place (5:06.21) and freshman Carlyann Miller in sixth (5:06.35). Freshman Caitlin Warner won the consolation final with a Rice-best 5:04.40 while freshman Keri Hyde was 12th (5:09.34).
For as strong as Rice was in the day's rugged distance race, the team was almost just as good in the 50-yard sprint. Four Owls placed in the top 10 in the 50. Freshman Diane Gu took second place among a field of 94 entrants with a time of 23.69. Senior Laura Healey clocked a season-best 23.82 to take third and Miller notched another sixth with a Rice-best 24.12. Freshman Skylar Craig was 10th overall with a season-best 24.35.
The team's success in the 50 came as no surprise after a season-best sprint relay to open the evening finals. The Owls' foursome of Gu, Miller, Craig and Healey took second in the 200-freestyle relay with a season-best mark of 1:35.14. Rice was later sixth in the 400-medley (3:57.83).
