IRVING, Tex. - Rice sophomore Erin Flanigan has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Tex., on Tuesday (Dec. 4).
Flanigan earned the honor for the second time this season after an impressive victory last week against No. 1 ranked Texas A&M. She battled for a season-best 4:54.14 to touch first in the 500-yard freestyle against the Aggies by sixth-tenths of a second, the fastest mark by an Owl ever recorded in the team's home Competition Pool and the second-best 500 in Conference USA this season. The sophomore from Austin, Texas, was also the Owls' top finisher in the 200-butterfly with a steady 2:03.92 to take third overall.
This is Flanigan's second Swimmer of the Week award for this season and career. On Oct. 30 Rice's Madison Livingston earned the league's weekly honor.
The Dec. 1 dual meet against Texas A&M was Rice's last before the University begins in Final Exams period for the fall semester. The Owl swimmers next return to action at the Incarnate Word University Invitational, a multi-team/multi-day meet in San Antonio on Dec. 15-17.
