After a two-week break since the team's last competition, the Rice swimmers are back in action at one of the biggest meets of the year this Thursday-Saturday (Nov. 17-19) across town at the Univeristy of Houston Invitational.
The U.H. meet is a massive ten teams competing in 18 different swim events over three days (with morning prelims and evening finals of each race). Joining Rice at the Cougars' Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium are Conference USA rivals SMU and Tulane, as well as swim teams from the Air Force Academy, Colorado State, Idaho, New Mexico, New Mexico State and Wyoming.
Rice head coach Seth Huston said the Owls welcomed the open spot on the schedule after four-straight meets in as many weeks dating back to mid-October. He also stated the team worked well in the off week and is ready to return to competition. When the Owls return it will be to their usual events, but this week there will be a little bit extra. The size of the invitational allows swimmers to compete in more events than a usual college dual meet. Huston hinted some of the Owls will get a chance to add new events to their resume this weekend.
"It was great to have a break in the action," coach Huston said. "We had a normal, structured week of training. Quincy Christian, Karina Wlostowska and Faith Hirschi all had a good week. We can swim up to six individual events and many will do so."
Prelims for each day of the meet begin at 10 am. Event finals are at 6 pm with four championship seeded heats. The event schedule is as follows:
