IRVING, Tex. - After winning four events and setting a new facility record in the Owls' Competition Pool, Rice's Shelly Patton has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for Oct. 30-Nov. 4, the league office announced Tuesday from its headquarters in Irving, Tex. FIU senior Sabrina Beaupre was named C-USA Diver of the Week.
Patton claimed four individual events, swam on a winning relay, and set a new Competition Pool record in leading the Owls to a pair of dual meet wins last weekend. In Rice's upset of No. 19 ranked SMU on Nov. 1 (Friday), she won the 400-yard individual medley in a new facility record time of 4:23.33. Patton also posted two backstroke times that are among the fastest in Conference USA this season, including a 2:01.95 in the 200 and a 56.93 in the 100. The sophomore from Denver, Col., then won three more individual races in a C-USA dual meet victory against North Texas on Saturday (Nov. 2). She won the 200-IM over a field of 14 entries with a time of 2:05.54, just off her C-USA leading mark set the week before. On Saturday her 1:52.17 to win the 200-freestyle ranked among the best in the conference, and later in the meet she won the 200-backstroke with a steady 2:03.67.
A sophomore transfer from Northwestern University, Patton also swam the lead leg on the Owls' 200-medley relay. On Saturday she led that Owl foursome to the C-USA's fastest mark so far this season (1:44.09). Two Owls have now won three of the last four C-USA Swimmer of the Week Awards, including Casey Clark on Oct. 15 & 29.
