IRVING, Texas – Rice’s Alicia Caldwell has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced from its headquarters in Irving, Texas, on Wednesday (Oct. 25).
In two dual meet victories over the weekend, Caldwell won a total of four individual events and swam on three winning relays as the Owls defeated state rivals SMU and North Texas. Caldwell swept the 100-freestyle and 200-free in both of the two meets. Her best times in those events, 51.48 and 1:50.64 respectively, were both recorded in the SMU meet Saturday (Oct. 21). Her 100-free time vs. SMU is currently the third-best mark in Conference USA so far this season. The native of Sydney, Australia, swam the lead/backstroke leg of both medley relays that finished in first place. She was also the second leg of the Owls’ winning 200-free relay. Caldwell’s victories helped Rice post a C-USA dual meet win over North Texas and a victory over longtime foe SMU for only the second time in school history.
This marks Caldwell's fourth career C-USA Swimmer of the Week award. Earlier this year Rice’s Lauren Rhodes won the same league honor (Oct. 11).
