IRVING, Tex. - After winning two individual events and swimming on a winning Owl relay, Rice junior Rachel Moody has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 28-Feb. 3, the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 4) from its headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Over the weekend Moody was one of the standouts in a two-day, four-way dual meet against nationally-ranked LSU, C-USA foe Tulane and crosstown rival Houston. She set the Rice school record in winning the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:01.71, the second-fastest time in C-USA this season. Moody also won the 200-breaststroke with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:15.27 that is the league's second-fastest mark this year. The Houston native from memorial High School swam on a total four relay races, including the breaststroke leg on the Owls' winning 400-medley relay that posted a final time of 3:46.77.
This is the first C-USA Swimmer of the Week honor for Moody in her collegiate career. Rice swimmers have now earned the C-USA honor a total of six times this season, including Owls Casey Clark (four times) Shelly Patton (once).
North Texas senior Catherine Jones was named C-USA Diver of the Week.
The Owl swimmers next compete at the Conference USA Championships from Feb. 26 to March 1 in Atlanta, Ga. Rice has won the conference swimming title in two of the last three years.
