IRVING - With three individual victories and the league's top time in the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore Erin Flanigan has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week the league office announced Tuesday from its headquarters in Irving, Tex.
Over the weekend (Jan. 25-26) Flanigan won three individual events over a two-day span at the LSU Quad Meet, a four-team multi-dual format between Conference USA foes Rice, Houston and Tulane and nationally-ranked host LSU.
In Friday's opening round of action Flanigan coasted to a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a season-best and a C-USA leading 10:08.01. On Saturday the distance specialist from Austin, Tex., won the 500-freestyle with a time of 4:56.11. She then came back four events later and led a 1-2-3 Rice finish with a win in the 200-butterfly (2:04.89). At the meet she also took seventh among a field of 18 in the 200-freestyle (1:55.12) and competed on one of the Owl relays.
The C-USA weekly honor is the third time for her to earn the award this season and third of her collegiate career. Two other Owls have been named the C-USA Swimmer of the Week this season, including Casey Clark (Dec. 18) and Madison Livingston (Oct. 30).
