IRVING, Tex. - After winning three individual events and finishing second in two others Rice junior Casey Clark has been named the Conference USA Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 21-27, the league office announced Tuesday (Jan. 28) from its headquarters in Irving, Texas.
In two dual meets in the state of Arkansas over the weekend, Clark won three individual events and was second in two others. On Saturday against SEC power Arkansas Clark charged to a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.98. Not only was she the lone competitor to go under 1:50 Saturday in the 200-freestyle, she did so for the third time in as many tries this season. Her winning mark was just slightly off her Conference USA-leading time of 1:45.69 set last month. The Spring, Texas, native was then second in both the 100-freestyle (51.46) and 100-butterfly (55.78) before swimming the lead leg on the Owls' 400-free relay that finished second with a time of 3:27.02. On Sunday against Arkansas-Little Rock, Clark showed her versatility by winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.22) and 100-backstroke (1:00.56).
This is the fourth C-USA Swimmer of the Week honor for Clark this season, and the fifth of her career. Rice swimmers have earned the C-USA honor a total of five times this season, including Owl sophomore Shelly Patton on Nov. 5. East Carolina sophomore Colleen Jones was named C-USA Diver of the Week.
The Owl swimmers are back in action on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 competing in the annual Quad Meet vs. LSU, Tulane and the University of Houston. The Cougars will host this year's edition of the two-day, four-team meet, across town at the UH Swim Center.
