Erin Flanigan won the 500-yard freestyle to pace the Owl swimmers on the first day of competition at the Rice-Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Medical Center Fall Invitational Friday afternoon (Oct. 26) at the Aquatics Center Competition Pool.
Through the first five swim races of the two-day, 18-event meet the Owls are in first place in the overall team standings with 310 points. TCU is in second place with 278 points. The University of Houston is third with 182 points while the University of the Incarnate Word is fourth with 164.
Not only did Flanigan swim the fastest 500-freestyle ever recorded by an Owl in the team's home pool (4:58.13) to win the event over 21 other entries, the Austin native also swam the anchor leg of Rice's winning 800-freestyle relay. The Owl foursome of Casey Clark, Chelsea Fong, Cora McKenzie and Flanigan won the 4x200 with a time of 7:36.20 in Rice first time to race that event this year.
Rice's Taylor Armstrong, Lilly Marrow, Clark and Fong teamed to give Rice a win in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:53.02. Fong also sprinted to a third place in the 50-freestyle with a season-best 23.98. Sophomore Madison Livingston was second, and senior Kylee Talwar was third, among a field of 30 entries in the 200-individual medley with season-best marks of 2:08.15 and 2:09.34, respectively.
Saturday's final day of the invitational meet has two different swim sessions. The first session features six individual events with two relays and beginning at 9 am. The second session has four individual events and one relay. Springboard diving is included throughout the day's events. Saturday's schedule is listed below.
