AUSTIN - The University of Texas swim team claimed a dual meet win over the Rice Owls by the score of 149-99 in the season-opening meet for both teams Friday afternoon in Austin.
Individually Rice was led by junior distance specialist Erin Flanigan, an Austin native who posted a pair of second place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.97) and 1,000 (10:15.47). Owl junior Casey Clark was second in the 200-frestyle with a time of 1:49.27.
The Owls' sprint relay team of Clark, Chelsea Fong, Marissa Konicke and Cora McKenzie was second in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.33. The mark is the fastest among Conference USA schools so far this season.
Rice junior Rachel Moody was third in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:05.54. The Owls sophomore tandem of Cora McKenzie and Shelly Patton both notched a pair of third place finishes in the 50-freestyle (24.09) and 200-breaststroke (2:23.71), respectively. Patton also finished third in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:07.28. The Blue & Gray was third in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:46.06.
The Owl swim team will host its next meet on Oct. 25-26 as part of the annual two-day Rice Invitational. Crosstown rival Houston and Incarnate Word join Rice in a full schedule of events at the Owls' Competition Pool.
