HOUSTON - The Rice swim team set three new school records and is in first place in the team standings after the first day of action at the annual Conference USA Championships held Wednesday night across town at the University of Houston Campus & Recreation Center Natatorium.

After the meet's only two events held Wednesday, the Owl swimmers lead the six team field with 74 points. Meet host Houston is second with 64 and Tulane is third with 62. East Carolina is fourth (54 points) followed by Marshall (54) and SMU (40).

Two Rice squads blazed to a pair of new school records in both the 200-medley and 800-freestyle relays. Michelle Gean, Lilly Marrow, Marissa Konicke and Karina Wlostowska tallied a school best 1:40.52 in the 200-medley. Casey Clark, Chelsea Fong, Erin Flanigan and Gean (again) went 7:11.57 in the 800. The Owls' third school record of the night was on the leadoff split of 800, where Clark posted a new Rice best of 1:45.78 for her 200-freestyle leg of the relay race. The mark is fast enough to provisionally qualify the sophomore from Spring, Tex., for a strong provisional spot to compete in next month's NCAA Championship meet.

No doubt about it, Rice swam well with three of its best marks in school history. Owl head coach Seth Huston will be the first to say the Blue & Gray also had a little help along the way to secure the early first place position on Day 1. Rice's 200-medley team originally appeared to finish in second place in the event, but was elevated to first place after another squad was disqualified by the meet officials.

"Christmas came early for us," coach Huston said. "In the very first event we were moved up into first because of a disqualification, but we did break our own school record in the race by almost two seconds. I thought we had great swims in the relays to start the meet, with an unexpected surprise of getting bumped-up to first place in the 200.

"Our 800 broke the school record as well," Huston added. "We had an awesome leadoff by Casey. I suspect that could put her in the hunt now to qualify for the NCAA Championships. It was a really strong relay across the board, and we had the lead for more than half the race. I remember there was a time when Rice could not have even competed for a relay win at conference, and now here we were duking-it-out with a strong SMU team. I'm really pleased with Michelle Gean, pulling double-duty on both relays tonight. She led off the medley and anchored the 800, and had great marks both times."

Coach Huston liked what he saw from the Owls. He is even more excited about the meet's remaining three days.

"This is a great start to the meet," the head coach explained. "Sure, first place was a little unexpected, but the reason this is a great start is because we swam so well. Obviously with only two relays most of the team could only watch tonight, but the whole team was excited and really into it for their teammates for both events.

"This is the meet we aim for," Huston added. "Tomorrow a lot more individuals will be in events, and I think we have some people who are ready to step-up."
