BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Rice swimmers closed out Saturday's final session of the annual Quad Meet by winning two of the three simultaneous dual meets at the LSU Natatorium in Baton Rouge, La.
In the team scoring the Owls defeated both Tulane (177-156) and crosstown rival Houston (182-165). Meet host LSU topped Rice 218-129 for the 17 swim events and two springboard diving events (in which the Owls do not compete).
Rice best finishes were second place by junior Alicia Caldwell in both the 200-backstroke (2:00.05) and 100-freestyle (51.00), and junior Kaitlyn Swinney was second in the 400-individual medley (423.84). The Blue & Gray foursome of Caldwell, Shelbi Ragsdale, Lauren Rhodes and Harper Gillentine were second in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.40.
"I was very pleased with the meet this weekend," said Rice head coach Seth Huston. "We really stepped up on Friday night and had five different individuals win events. Today, we stayed-with despite struggling to swim back-to-back sessions.
"Our relays were really solid," he added. "Alicia in particular was really on this weekend."
The Owl swimmers are next scheduled to compete in the annual Conference USA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., on Feb. 22-25. The C-USA meet will be held at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center, the same swim venue that hosted the 1996 Olympics.
